 What Does The Residency Involve?
This program offers nurses the opportunity for clinical practice in an environment committed to professional growth through nurse-patient relationships, evidence-based practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration. While the skills learned vary among the Residency settings, the purpose of the Nursing Residency is to help develop your on-the-job organizational and patient care abilities while you orient to the acute or critical-care setting. The Residency program includes a didactic component with skills labs and an extensive precepted clinical experience; thus you will learn how to apply theories and concepts to the work environment. Duration is dependent upon the unit of hire and achievement of standard competencies.
What Does The Orientation Process Include?
The orientation process for nurses at Grandview / Southview Medical Centers encompasses three distinct steps: new employee orientation (completed by all new employees), nursing orientation, and unit-based orientation. As you move through the steps, you will notice that orientation progresses from general topics concerning nursing at Grandview / Southview Medical Centers to very specific information covering care and services on your unit. All new nurses within the Grandview / Southview Medical Centers system go through the new employee orientation and nursing orientation. We seek constantly to improve our Residency orientation process and strive to personalize the program to meet individual needs.
Do You Hire Grads Without a Nursing Residency?
At this time, Grandview / Southview Medical Centers nursing leadership supports all new graduates participating in the Nurse Residency program. We believe that every new nurse deserves a sound start. A well-designed introduction, along with your full commitment, establishes a strong foundation and sets a positive direction for greater satisfaction and success in your work. We provide a number of resources, so you can quickly develop a working knowledge of the systems and processes essential to provide safe, high quality, efficient patient care. Your unit manager and preceptor along with the program coordinator collaborate to ensure you are gradually introduced to new skills with practice opportunities.
What is The Purpose of The Program?
The goal of the program, based on Patricia Benner's From Novice to Expert, is to assist the progress of the newly hired novice to a competent nurse. Participating nurses receive a full salary and an excellent benefits package, as well as dedicated preceptors and faculty during orientation. The Nurse Residency Program is designed specifically to equip new nurses as they transition from the educational setting, and to provide ongoing support throughout the two-year contract period as they face the complexities of hospital practice.
